SNOUT-TO-VENT

The most widely recognized unit of measurement is the “Snout-to-Vent” length, or SVL. This is the part of the body from the snout, or nose, to the vent, which is the opening located under the hips, where the iguana defecates.

Iguana scientists and herpetologists use this as the standard of measurement due to the fact that the tail can break off. If the tail is to be included in the measurement, it’s referred to as the “Total Length”, or TL.
